Hamilton was Victoria’s first area of pastoral settlement, and today it remains the heartbeat of a thriving farming district. Whilst much of Victoria’s early foundations were built on gold, Hamilton rode on the sheep’s back, with the area once referred to as the “wool capital of the world”. Wool was of great economic and social importance to the growth of the town, and today, the industry continues to thrive, with up to 60,000 lambs being yarded on sale day during the busy season at the Hamilton Regional Livestock Exchange. The Hamilton Regional Livestock Exchange (HRLX) is the second largest sheep selling centre in Victoria and South Australia, processing an average of 1,000,000 sheep per annum. The HRLX also sells approximately 30,000 cattle per annum.
Western Victoria Livestock Exchange is in the centre of the largest proportion of the region’s cattle population, just off the Hamilton Highway in Mortlake, South West Victoria. The weekly Prime Cattle Markets are held each Monday and a monthly Store sale is also offered every third Thursday of the month. This state-of-the-art facility has further extended the sales opportunities we provide to our clients.
